Last night, when Scott went to feed the girls, he found Lady and Maia near each other – Lady was in Yard 1, and Maia was in 5 along the adjacent fence line.
Scott fed Lady first and set her food down somewhat close to the fence. As he did this, Maia approached the fence because she wanted her dinner too.
When another elephant approaches a shared fence, Lady’s recent pattern is to walk away and then walk back. Last night was different – as Maia approached, Lady just walked up to her dinner and started eating. She didn’t walk away first. She seemed relaxed and curious, but Scott didn’t observe any of the concern or hesitation that we usually see in her.
Scott also fed Maia close to the fence, and even though Maia was high energy and full of excitement about dinner time, there was still no reaction from Lady. Lady was paying attention, but she wasn’t worried about Maia. When Scott drove off to feed Rana, they were happily eating dinner together.
Photo: Lady is closer, and Maia is on the other side of the fence.

January 23, 2020 at 5:17 pmThat is brilliant news every day brings Lady to realise she is safe loved and can be friends with someone. It must be hard after being on her own to have a different life completely having love and attention from humans and being near her own kind. It must feel so rewarding to you also to see lady changing. Thank you so much for the wonderful life you are giving to these 3 girls.. xx

Thank you for your thoughtful entries. They inspire compassion, kindness and caring.
I can’t be there to build a fence but I fundraising locally to contribute money to
the care of these elephants and the expenses incurred with expanding your facility.

January 23, 2020 at 6:21 pmOne cannot have instant friendship, it just does not happen. But bit by bit, trust grows and solidifies.
After all these poor elephants have not had the love of their mothers, sisters or aunts as they would have had in a normal elephant life, so it stands to reason, they have to take it step by small step.
