With the rainy season in full swing, the elephants are enjoying hours of grazing in the greenest parts of the habitat. There’s an almost never-ending world for them to explore, though they tend to each have favorite spots to eat. In this video, Guillermina has found a lovely piece of land to focus on and is snacking away with great enjoyment. It may look like she’s playing with her food, but she’s actually swinging her trunk around to shake off the dirt, seeds, and water from her mouthful of grass.
You may notice as she walks toward the camera that Guille now has some muscle definition in her upper legs. Her natural sanctuary diet and days spent roaming the habitat are doing exactly what they should: getting her into healthy shape. She’s still got a little way to go as far as her weight is concerned, but her body is building the muscle that will help prevent joint disease and other health issues common in captive elephants.
