Guillermina Meets an Armadillo

There are numerous species that call the sanctuary home, and we enjoy seeing how they interact with and live alongside the elephants. (You may remember how Bambi used to “protect” us all from the native tapirs that live around the property.) A few days ago, Guillermina was enjoying some snacks along the fence between Yards 4 and 5. At the same time, an armadillo (or tatu, as they’re known in Brazil) was running back and forth between those same two yards.

Caregiver Tina was cleaning Yard 4 and saw Guillermina spin around in surprise, after witnessing the armadillo run right by her. Its presence clearly surprised Guille, though she didn’t appear to be fearful or defensive. It seemed that she was almost playing with the armadillo, who eventually disappeared into the tall grass. We didn’t see the tatu anymore after that, but Guillermina clearly got an unexpected startle to liven up her day.

P.S.: There’s less than one week until Giving Tuesday when we raise funds to help provide the special medical care and treatments Rana receives to keep her healthy and strong. And, thanks to a $50,000 matching gift challenge from Asia Wild, all gifts towards Rana’s care will be matched with a gift for Lady’s care too. That’s double the impact! But you don’t have to wait until Giving Tuesday, early giving starts now.

Whoever would have thought in her previous life, while living within a barren stone enclosure that Guille would ever have an encounter with an armadillo!!😂❤️🐘

How adorable! I love elles and armadillos! But I can imagine Guille’s surprise if she’s never encountered one!
