The elephants who arrive at sanctuary come here with their own unique issues to tackle. You may remember that Guillermina and Pocha arrived at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil, they had a lot to learn about what their lives could be in this new world, and what it meant to be around other elephants. They were also both clinically obese, with Guille having the most weight to lose.
Guille still has some issues to contend with as she grows and learns to deal with Pocha’s death. She has matured emotionally in ways that are extremely encouraging, making friends with Maia and Bambi and learning gradually about what herd life means. She also has access to a natural diet and habitat, which means she can graze on food that’s healthy and has different types of land to traverse at any time she wants. Because she’s young and has lots of energy, that tends to mean that she moves plenty. And you can see it in how her body has been transformed.
As you can see here, where Guillermina was once incredibly round, she has now built muscle and lost unnecessary fat. She is now a healthy weight, perhaps for the first time in her adult life. Her face has slimmed, and she looks transformed. She’s settling into herself and working through her emotional challenges – things that happen naturally at sanctuary after a time. So many changes for this young girl in such a short amount of time and while she had a very rough start on her journey, she has learned grace, friendship, the love and affection of her sisters/teachers and gained so much more.
