As with all steps in sanctuary life, we try to keep things on “elephant time,” and that includes introducing new things into each elephant’s life. For Pocha and Guillermina, that process has been more gradual than with some of the other elephants, but the progress has been steady.
Several weeks ago, rather than allowing the two new girls to sleep in the barn each night, we began leaving the gate between the smaller yards and the larger Yard 4 open on some nights. Guille seemed a little tired on the nights she slept in the big yard, so we kept the gate closed a couple of nights each week, allowing them access to the barn and the small yards. Once Guillermina began getting more rest when the yards were open, we decided to switch up how we were doing things. The gates between their smaller yards and Yard 4 are now open each night. The “Powerpuff Girls,” Maia, Guille, and Pocha all have access to the same space.
So far, the whole crew seems to be doing very well with the new setup. The ladies will spend time together in different combinations during dinner time and when socializing. We can’t see exactly where everyone is sleeping each night, but all of the girls seem well rested and have adjusted to this new development.
