Global Sanctuary for Elephants is proud to announce that we are receiving the 2022 award for Outstanding International Sanctuary by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). This award is given annually to only 5 out of over 200 eligible GFAS accredited and verified organizations, including sanctuaries that provide lifetime care for animals, animal rescue centers, and rehabilitation facilities. It is humbling and an honor to have our work recognized within a field of sanctuaries and organizations that are among the highest caliber in the world.
GFAS exists to certify organizations which meet or exceed the highest level of standards of animal care, stewardship, ethics, sustainability and leadership within the sanctuary field. Last year, when it was announced that Global Sanctuary for Elephants and our work with Santuario de Elefantes Brasil was the first sanctuary in South America to be accredited by GFAS, we never imagined that we would soon be the recipient of one of the highest recognitions within our sanctuary community.
We are grateful for the mission of Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries which works to ensure that the word “sanctuary” holds meaning within the animal care world. During a time when any facility can claim to be a sanctuary, regardless of their capabilities or commitment to honoring the lives under their care, GFAS creates accountability and holds its members to an unrivaled standard of operation.
With each passing year, more of you are becoming a part of our sanctuary family, devoted to elevating our mission of protecting, rescuing, and providing healing homes for elephants at a global level. As always, we thank all of our loyal supporters who understand and advocate for sanctuary for all captive animals. This generous award is not only a recognition of our work; it is also a recognition of all of you who have joined us to change the future for captive elephants. Thanks to GFAS for this meaningful distinction.
