This year, our amazing community came together to raise $147,330 to go toward the total cost of a major expansion of the Female Asian Elephant Habitat at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil, and we are incredibly grateful.

Why Space Is So Essential
Before sanctuary, elephants lived in enclosures far too small for both their bodies and minds, deprived of the freedom to make their own choices. Many spent years performing in circuses or standing on display in zoos, confined to small, unnatural spaces of hard earth or concrete, some even chained. They suffered mentally, physically, and emotionally, coping with the extreme deprivation by gradually adapting away from their natural, healthy way of being and their true selves.
At sanctuary, vast spaces allow elephants to walk farther than they have in decades—and for some, farther than they have ever walked in their lives. They roam freely, exploring as they choose. As their bodies grow stronger, they re-engage with their surroundings, and their inner light begins to return. In this safety, many find the courage to open themselves to companionship, forming bonds with others who share a similar journey. With time, they rediscover what it means to be an elephant, and their true selves reemerge.
Our goal is greater than space alone. It is about the healing, peace, and dignity that inevitably comes with wide open spaces. Expanding by approximately 200 acres means giving elephants more of all of this.
