Further Updates on Lady’s Health

Over the past week or so, Lady has been having some difficulties with her feet, which we detailed here. She is currently experiencing some swelling around her feet and lower legs and is clearly more tentative in her movements. We have been updating medication types and doses, trying to find a combination of anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and pain medications that will reduce the swelling and allow her a greater level of comfort. She’s also receiving topical medications to help reduce swelling and pain.

As of this morning, Lady is doing a little better. It appears that some of the swelling has gone down over the last couple of days. She is still not where we would like for her to be, both medically and emotionally. She seems to be much more watchful currently than she is on a normal day. We’ve always suspected that part of the reason why Lady appears uncomfortable sharing space with other elephants is because she is insecure about the state of her feet and her ability to walk away from a scenario that makes her uneasy. That theory seems to be at least anecdotally proving true: at one point over the weekend, Bambi and Guillermina were on the other side of the fence in a separate yard from Lady. They were playing and having silly interactions and the encounter seemed to spook Lady. She left the area immediately, whereas on an average day, their presence likely wouldn’t faze her. She’s definitely more alert to what’s going on around her, particularly with other elephants.

We watched her on the observation camera last night and noted that she moved around a good bit during the evening. That’s a positive, as she wasn’t walking around very much during the previous few days. This morning, she willingly came over to the fence to receive treatment – though we didn’t ask for her to present her feet. We only worked on the tops of them and had a look at the recurring abscess on her face. She allowed all of this, though she did give Scott a couple of sideways glances during the process.

Lady is still eating and drinking normally, and her dung is normal. We are making sure that we are transporting hoses to her wherever she is in the yard so that she can stay hydrated and have nice baths throughout the day. Our team is mindful that any medication changes could impact her gastrointestinal health, and we don’t want to add another issue to all of the things she’s currently dealing with. Overall, Lady still has a ways to go in order for us to be satisfied that things are improving as a whole. As this journey continues, we will update you with any significant changes.

I must have missed your update where her facial abscess was brought up . You say it is recurring ?
I do hope that is not a sign of a deeper malaise , do you think it causes her much pain ?

It’s something she’s had for years. They’re often caused by pressure points resting on hard surfaces for long periods of time. She’s excellent about having it treated almost daily.
