It is currently the hottest time of the year in Mato Grosso. In order to make sure the girls stay cool, we give them frozen treats like elephant-sized Gatorade or Pedialyte “popsicles”. We also cut up pieces of fruit to freeze and offer them during snack time, when we also bring them little bits of hay. Frozen slices of watermelon are favorites.
Maia prefers to step on her popsicles to break them apart before eating them, so she doesn’t always like that option as much as the other cold offerings, but Mara and Rana both race toward the watermelon, both trying to outrun the other to get as many pieces as they possibly can. Lady loves all of these special treats, but Bambi can be ambivalent. Still, we make sure to always offer them to everyone whenever we make them.
