From Scott: On GSE’s 10th Anniversary

We are presently in the US visiting family, friends, and a few of our longtime supporters. One of them asked how long we have been in Brazil, and we quickly realized that it had been long enough that we needed to calculate based on our 2014 arrival.  A day later, our editor Sara reminded us that this week is the 10-year anniversary of the founding of Global Sanctuary for Elephants.  With elephants in need and the constant and very high demands of sanctuary development and operation, it is easy to lose track of time.

Global Sanctuary for Elephants (GSE) was founded on the principle of building the future captive elephants need and deserve.  We knew that we could count on your support while we put to use the countless gifts we’ve gained and lessons learned from the elephants to build pivotal sanctuaries.  Together, we have provided for 9 precious elephants in Brazil, while offering aid for many others, including wild animals, chickens, goats, and more.  At the same time, we have been joined by like minds from around the globe, and, together, we helped to broaden the minds of countless others.
Our work is just beginning.  We look back on our accomplishments with pride, but we can’t celebrate for long. Elephants are waiting, bureaucratic hurdles remain, and South America is just one small piece of the captive elephant crisis.  As we look forward to the next 10 years, we aim to see an end to the suffering of captive elephants in South America. And, as the governments of Buenos Aires and Mendoza have shown, a possibility for responsible stewardship not only exists but there is a feasible solution for other countries when addressing all of our roles in animal injustice. We seek to continue to play a role in promoting these progressive laws and the change that comes with a deeper understanding of the depth of trauma.

Change can’t happen overnight, but 10 years ago, GSE took a single step in the right direction, walking with open arms toward a brighter future. You are our partners in this journey and we all must continue forward for the sake of all captive animals around the world.

I am truly honored to be part of this amazing family! Your dedication and love to save these beautiful gentle giants is so inspiring as we have learned they can teach humans so much about life if given the chance they are quite an impressive intelligent gift to us that needs to be saved for many reasons. I envy you all but know only too well the pain and sadness that comes with many rescues not all live as long as they should Ramba sadly taught me that their lives cut short by man’s hand and that’s got to be so hard so we thank you all for your hard work we will never leave this caring loving family once you see what’s involved once you meet these glorious elephants and look into their big beautiful eyes you are in it for the long haul we will help you save as many as possible…..God bless you all
