Maia, Guillermina, and Bambi have spent much of their time recently in Yard 5, but one afternoon when Rana and Mara were in the yards near the barn, we gave the three elephants the chance to move into Yard 4, since it’d been a while since they roamed that space–and they took advantage of it. Once Mara and Rana were ready to go back into the larger yards, they headed out the open gate into Yard 5 for a change.

Guille had been hanging out in the shade underneath a tree behind the annex, kind of on her own. The other two ladies were near the water trough, splashing themselves with the cool water and generally making a muddy mess. Guille found some hay in the habitat and kept making trips to grab a few bites, carrying them under the shade of the trees. Eventually, Maia walked over and joined her out of the sun, and then Bambi made her way in that direction as well. Guille is known for venturing out on her own and wandering solo when the mood strikes her. More often than not, she heads over to meet Bambi and Maia when they’re together. It was charming and sweet to see the older ladies seek out their younger friend for a change.
