Everyone is Very Vocal

Right now, we have a very vocal group of elephants at sanctuary. There has been so much chatting going on, mostly between the two groups of girls: Mara and Rana and then Maia and Bambi – with plenty of Guillermina in there for good measure. She seems to have a lot to say when she checks in with Maia and Bambi, in particular.

Almost every time Maia separates and then finds Bambi again, there is a celebration. Immediately, both elephants start to rumble and make little trumpets and chatter. Maia makes her “grandma wheeze” by blowing air out of her nose. Mara is also chatting frequently with Rana, who has plenty to say in return. During treatments and checkups, everyone has been vocal with their fellow elephants and with the caregivers. We don’t know the reason. It could be pure contentment for all we know. Regardless, hearing chatty elephants throughout the day makes us feel as though the girls are settling into a new routine and are feeling increasingly comfortable.

I thought just what Melinda said when I read this! I so wish I could have a translation. It sounds like they’re very content.
