Yesterday evening, we took our late-night trip down to the Male Asian Habitat to check on Sandro. These visits will eventually be phased out, but for the time being we like being able to evaluate his behavior and make sure he seems to be settling in alright. A little extra snack reinforces that we’re around if he needs us. We also know, from our cameras at the zoo, that he was awake and on camera until around midnight, so we shouldn’t be disturbing his sleep.
When Scott met up with Sandro, he found him covered in mud. As Scott mentions here, it seemed that Sandro’d been in the wallow. So far, we know he likes to make mud from the water troughs that are located throughout the habitat. He will mix up the dirt and water with his feet and scoop it up into a pile with his trunk before splashing himself with it. He has access to the pond, but we haven’t managed to capture any visits on video. With his seeming curiosity about playing in water, we hope to show you more splashing soon!

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.
