We had an elephant party this week, which happens some mornings. The girls gathered together and had a vocal celebration just before breakfast. The elephants seem to have more energy before their morning meal, after which they often nap in the shade.
Lady was in the back of Yard 3, while the others had access to both Yards 4 and 5. But on this morning, everyone eventually gathered in the area of Yard 4 that neighbors Yard 3. Lady was there, just on the opposite side of the fence. Everyone was talking and making all sorts of noise. It’s possible that Lady joined in, in her own fashion, since elephants can communicate in so many ways.
The fence line was lined with Rana and Mara and then, just to the side of them stood Bambi, Maia, and Guillermina. Lady didn’t touch anybody from her side of the fence, but she also didn’t walk away or seem to be uncomfortable with the energy and celebrations there. It was nice to see the larger group find Lady and join her in an inclusive way.

June 20, 2023 at 2:24 pmWOW, to hear our entire herd was together, each in their own way, is remarkable and wonderous! Not only is Lady becoming more comfortable with the others but knowing that the others appear to be seeking her out to include her and accepting her as is….well, that brings so much joy and is reason enough for their party!!! Hears to many more such joyous morning parties!!!

June 20, 2023 at 8:05 pmFrom Another Maureen: These wise, kind creatures will never see their true families again, but in this splendid sanctuary they have formed a family of the heart. I wonder if Lady was isolated in captivity…whether at last she joins the others, we can only wish her peace and contentment, and love to you who provide it.

June 22, 2023 at 9:02 amThat is amazing. It sounds as if all the girls went out of their way to include Lady in the fun, as well as the experience of just ‘being’ together. I am so impressed with all of them. And, I’m so happy for them, too.
