Around lunch time, Guillermina was near the water trough having a drink before she moved into the shade to eat some hay. The caregivers thought the three elephants might want some water from the hose, so they turned it on and Bambi and Maia were immediately interested. Guille continued with her hay for a little while before heading toward the humans for a little hydration. 

Many elephants, when you put water in their noses using a hose, angle their trunks downward and make a little cup with the end to catch the water. (You can see Bambi doing that in this video.) Guille is a little different and, instead, often reaches straight out for her special drinks. We’re not sure if this is because she had to lift her trunk over her head for what she wanted at her ecoparque enclosure, or if it’s simply a preference or more comfortable for her. You can watch how she positions the end of her nose here, before squirting a large gulp of water directly into her mouth.
