Recently at dinner time the caregivers were looking for all of the girls so that they could serve nightly meals. Rana, Mara, and Bambi were in Yard 4, all in areas adjacent to Yards 2 and 3, with Lady in the middle of Yard 2. The caregivers fed the Powerpuff Girls along the common fence line.
Lady walked toward the caregivers when they were feeding Mara. Since she seemed interested in being closer to the others, the caregivers decided to give her dinner under the big tree in the back of Yard 2, which is directly across from where the three girls were eating.
We talk about fences allowing the elephants to feel safe and give them space from humans, and this is an excellent example of how knowing a barrier existed may have allowed Lady to feel comfortable snacking near the others. While Lady has a special relationship with Rana, the other girls do come near her at times, perhaps just to be close or to communicate somehow. Because of the vast space available to her, Lady has the ability to leave a situation that makes her uncomfortable, so it was lovely to see her have a moment with some of the girls she doesn’t regularly share a close space with.

June 14, 2023 at 6:05 pmWhy is Lady uncomfortable around other elephants?
Sara says
June 14, 2023 at 6:17 pmThere’s no way to know with certainty. More than likely it has to do with her difficult past and the state of her feet, which almost certainly cause her to feel as though she couldn’t run away if necessary. But we can’t know all that happened to her before sanctuary.

June 14, 2023 at 11:20 pmI think Lady is so very brave. She knows Grandma Rana is so Loving and nurturing. Rana and the girls are so supportive and facilitate a space of trust, to help her heal. Thank you beautiful girls!!!

June 15, 2023 at 10:10 amWe can’t know if Lady will ever be side by side with the other elephants but it does seem there is some progress in her feeling safer being closer to them. And that is good.
