Bambi is Tentative in the Annex

Bambi eating hayIn the morning, most of the girls were spending time in Yard 5 so, for a change in scenery, we encouraged them to move over into Yard 4. Bambi and Guillermina met up and were near the annex. So, since Mara, Rana, and Maia were elsewhere, this seemed like a good opportunity to do some treatments on Bambi without all of the others around. Because of her impaired eyesight, Bambi can occasionally be tentative about walking into the annex chute.

Perhaps because only Guille was near, Bambi walked into the chute very confidently – and ended up doing great. The caregivers gave her eye drops, put topical treatments on her stiff leg, and did a check for ticks. She seemed very comfortable and afterwards she grazed in the small pasture of the annex.

It was important to allow Bambi this time to herself, so that she could feel as comfortable as possible and have some dedicated time allotted just for her. After that, she walked to the pond and also had a nice scratch on one of the trees. Normally, you might expect Bambi to be near Rana and Mara, but they were off grazing elsewhere. Instead, everyone spread out throughout the morning, taking advantage of the vast terrain available to them. And Bambi had a special few moments and treats that were all for her.

Bambi is such a special girl. It is comforting to know that she is being given the freedom and time to herself to just be. Once again thank you GSE for the loving, considerate in every sense of the word care you give ALL of these special deserving souls. 🐘❤️

I love that each of the girls are treated as individuals and their needs are met based on their own set of circumstances. That you make extra time for them when needed, such as Bambi in this circumstance, shows just how close of attention you pay to them. You knew that Bambi needed some extra attention and alone time and were able to provide her with that. Our girls are so lucky they landed at the sanctuary where you truly work hard to understand them and provide the very best! Thank you for loving them so much!

Thank you. All of those things you listed are important parts of sanctuary life. Respect is important.

Something I’ve wanted to ask for some time, and may have already been addressed is, what happens if/when Mason joins the herd sometime in the future? Will Bambi respond in fear and withdraw from the other girls to hide?

there’s no reason to believe that would happen. things are very different with space and choice. maia and guida had a terrible relationship before coming to sanctuary. maia would push on guida and know her down. but they were the closest of friends here. and, when it came to the relationship between bambi and maison, bambi was actually the one that would start the fights, maison was just bigger and stronger, so bambi didn’t do well once they were started. we don’t know how their relationship would evolve if maison was ever able to come here, but like with all elephant interactions, we allow them to set the tone and we observe and respond to try to create the best scenarios possible.

Thank you for clarifying the relationship between Bambi and Maison. I just remembered how very fearful Bambi was and wouldn’t even come out of the barn when they were together. I didn’t realize that Bambi actually started the conflicts. I’m so glad that she is doing so well with the other girls. Thank you again!
