Bambi Calls to Maia

As days go by, we’re beginning to witness how deep Bambi’s friendship with Maia has become. She seems watchful at times due to her cataracts impacting her vision, and she gives off an uneasy energy when she’s in that headspace. So, when Mateus was recently doing Bambi’s treatments and she heard something behind her, she turned, put her ears out, and looked around – very alert. Maia was close by, eating her breakfast. Then Bambi made a noise, and when she did Maia came over immediately.

The two vocalized a little bit and were touching and checking in with each other. There were some sweet rumbles and then everything appeared to be okay again after that. Mateus quietly encouraged the two elephants to have their little party and eventually Maia walked away on her own. That action let him know that Bambi was most likely feeling better. In fact, she went right back to her treatments and was a perfect patient while getting her eye drops.

We’ve seen elephants call to one another before. Clearly, after years of running to Mara’s squeaks, Bambi understands the power of vocalizations. It’s sweet that Maia will come right away, because Bambi has never really had that type of response from a friend. Even when the “Powerpuff Girls” were together all of the time, sometimes Bambi would call for her friends and nobody would come. We think Bambi is beginning to see how much Maia seems to adore her and Bambi’s mood appears light and easy in a way that we haven’t seen in quite a while.

Sweet, Sweet Mai, being there for her friend Bambi. Losing vision must be a very scary thing for our Bambi. It’s a wonderful thing that she has Maia to reassure her that she is not alone.

Emotional. Does Bambi manage to walk around on her own and find her way? Or is she always with Maia now? Do blind elephants survive? Thank you. And yes it’s a wonderful photo

Right now Bambi is walking around okay. She still has some vision – but she also has a friend to help her along if she needs it. There are elephants at other sanctuaries who’ve lost their sight who are helped along by others and they do fine. It’s hard for us to speak to what happens in the wild, but we’ve heard of elephants doing the same sort of thing – guiding and even feeding impaired elephants.

Just love reading the special bond growing amongst these two beautiful girls. Nothing like knowing a best friend is just a trumpet call away. 🐘🐘🐘.
And btw, the photo is absolutely spectacular.

Such a heartwarming read its amazing at how these girls are so in tune with one another much more than we even know. Maia when in need of her Sissy Bambi knows this and comes to comfort her what a super way to start my day knowing how much these girls love and protect one another but I guess that’s what they do in the wild too. Thank you all for allowing these gentle giants to be free be who they truly are. They are amazing elephants that have so much to teach humans if we would only watch listen and learn….💞
