Baby’s Eating Within Sight of the Others

While Baby hasn’t been showing many visible signs (to our human eyes) of acknowledging the other elephants are across the corridor from her habitat, she’s been periodically placing herself in the yard closest to the Female Asian Habitat. The other elephants have been very vocal and, though we don’t know if their trumpets and squeaks are directed at Baby, since they are normally vocal, they know she’s around and are curious about her. In fact, the three girls, Maia, Bambi, and Guillermina, have shown an interest in checking out the area from which they can see Baby’s yard. They’ve been spotted grazing within sight distance of Baby a couple of times. 

In this video, Baby has grabbed some hay and is eating near the backside of the pond. This is also near the corridor that connects to the other girls’ habitat. She’s spent much of the day wandering around, still going back to the barn on occasion, but that’s gradually happening less and less. Her bravery and curiosity are impressive and she’s settling in nicely.

    Hi, I was wondering if you have any updates on when Baby’s quarantine period will be done or when all her blood work results will be in? I was also curious if you have noticed any improvement on the blood that you were seeing in her fecal matter. Thank you as always for all that you share with us on our beautiful Girls!! ❤️🐘❤️

      It’s going to be a number of weeks, since some of the tests require time to allow culture samples to develop. We don’t have an estimate at this time, but it’s not going to be in the very near future. Her feces looks more normal so far, but blood tests may give us an idea of what’s going on inside.

    Do we have a general time frame for her quarantine? So excited to see the new dynamics when she is able to meet the rest of the girls!

      We do not. It will be an extended period of time, due to the number of judge-ordered tests that must be studied. Many take weeks to process, since cultures take time to develop.

    A perfect picture of elephant paradise. Baby munching on hay and whatever she pleases, birds chirping in background, lush greenery, Baby resting her back leg casually on the other, and looking totally at peace. 🐘❤️❤️❤️

    Is Baby doing any vocalization back?

      Nothing that’s an obvious response to them, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t communicating in another elephant way.
