Baby is getting more self-assured and showing us different sides of her personality every day. But, with as much progress as she’s made, she still seems drawn to her caregivers sometimes, almost like a safety blanket, which is totally fine for this stage in her journey. When she hears the 4-wheeler, she might head near the barn looking for her humans. If a caregiver walks into the barn, she may head that way, and if they leave the barn, she will sometimes follow them outside and down the fence line. But it depends on the time of day and her mood as to whether she sticks to this pattern or not.
We’re careful to look for those moments when Baby wants some sort of interaction. She doesn’t seem to want too much physical affection, but at times she does like being in close proximity to people. Recently, this has begun improving and she is gradually tapering off how often she checks in on people. A few times, when we’ve gone out to see how she’s doing, we haven’t been able to find her right away. It could be a sign that she knows we’re nearby and chooses to stay out–which is a nice step forward. Everybody needs time to heal and as Baby’s confidence grows, it’s very likely that she’ll seek us out less and less.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

July 6, 2026 at 2:09 pmShe’s still getting used to experiencing having the freedom she’s never had before. I’m so glad she’s slowly getting used to it and having humans understanding her moods, behavior, her wanting to be around them when she needs it🥰

July 6, 2026 at 6:48 pmAgree! Baby is making great progress for the length of time she has been at GSE. It still must seem to her like she has landed on another planet. So proud of her, and ever so thankful for GSE. GSE allows her to become an independent elephant all on her own time.❤️🐘
