It was morning and time for Baby’s breakfast delivery. Her caregivers drove around the outside of the yards for a bit, looking for her, but she wasn’t immediately visible. They stopped and started talking to her, letting her know that her food was ready, and heard her walking through the trees–directly over some vines and bushes–then met her team at the fence.
We caught her doing much of the same thing in this video. Like Pocha and Guillermina when they first arrived, Baby sometimes has an enthusiastic approach to creating pathways through the habitat. That might mean walking back and forth over tall grass, or charging through brush, as she’s doing here. She only makes it a few steps in before she changes her mind and heads in the other direction, but it shows that she doesn’t appear to be afraid to explore new spots. All of this represents Baby’s emotional growth and bravery. She was initially uncertain about wandering the more remote parts of the habitat, instead keeping to the trails that had been cleared for her. Now that she’s making her own trails, she’s truly starting to claim sanctuary as her new home.

August 18, 2026 at 9:50 amIt’s really something, right? I’m fascinated by their gait, so relatively soft for such large beings.

August 17, 2026 at 10:39 pmI love that she is that comfortable to do that. I’d like to know why her toenails are so white?
Sara says
August 18, 2026 at 11:23 amIt’s because they’ve been recently trimmed. You might have noticed Maia’s shiny toenails a few weeks ago. Hers were especially noticeable.

August 18, 2026 at 3:42 pmIs she still being separated from the other girls or have I missed a beat somewhere?
Sara says
August 18, 2026 at 3:45 pmShe’s still in quarantine because of the judicial ruling. We are expecting test results will still require a number of weeks to be received. But she’s hanging out in the area of her yard where she can see the other elephants. They all seem very curious about each other.
