Baby is Breaking Palms and Creating New Pathways

Some elephants really love palms and others don’t enjoy them as much. For instance, Bambi likes them at any time and in any stage of growth. She’s not particularly fond of when Guille tries to share a few bites, since she’s a fan as well. Maia has the approach of waiting until they get a little dry and crispy; everyone has their own personal tastes. Baby seems to be just about in the middle of the palm spectrum, as far as all of the girls go. She enjoys eating them occasionally, but has really taken to crashing through and breaking them. This tells the caregivers exactly where she’s been walking across the wooded areas of the habitat. 

In addition to that, we’re seeing more and more trees with smaller broken limbs farther out into the yards. Baby is so curious that she appears to be walking right through or over them, much like Guillermina and Pocha did in their early days at sanctuary. 

P.S.: Baby has found a few trees that she really enjoys rubbing against. She hasn’t decided on one favorite, but she’s definitely testing out a few, exfoliating the dead skin from her body. This video is a great example of Baby enjoying a good scratch.

    Love this update on beautiful Baby!! The anticipation of waiting for something new is tough!!! I could watch her for hours; waiting for more. From her behaviors she seems to be happier and excited by her new life. More happiness to come Baby !!!😍❤️🩷

    I am so proud of Baby, she is showing such bravery and curiosity and it is wonderful to witness!! Glad she is finding a few Itchy Scratchy trees and I am sure she will find a favorite out there that works just eight!! ❤️🐘❤️
