Baby Decides Palms are Yummy

The Male Asian Habitat, which Baby has all to herself while she’s in quarantine, is filled with palm trees. Baby’s caregivers have been offering her various snacks to see what her preferences are. So far, she seems to like almost everything, from melons, to apples, to beets and carrots, and more: her diet is a multi-colored cornucopia. (The only thing she’s turned down to date is pineapple.) After simply playing with the palm leaves around her for a while, she’s also discovered that she enjoys eating them; sometimes she’s delicate with her selections and snaps them into smaller pieces, but other times–like the one shown here–she’s extra enthusiastic about the crunchy green snacks she’s found.

P.S.: For those who have been curious about when Baby’s quarantine will end, the quick answer is: there’s no set date. Because this was a court-directed relocation, there are many intricacies involved. When there are any updates on Baby shifting habitats, we will share that with all of you. In the meantime, let’s take this time to celebrate that Baby has already received a gift most captive elephants will never know as we take in the healing that has already begun.

I just wonder if she’s thinking “why can’t I be with the other girls over there? Why am I here when I want to be with them and share their space instead? I want to meet them.” Do you think that ever crosses their mind? Or maybe the other girls wonder why Baby can’t come over to their habitat so they can all hang out together. I’m anxious for all of them to be able to share the same habitats.

And she doesn’t like pineapple? That’s strange. It’s so sweet and juicy and delicious, that’d be my first choice in the fruit bowl. Maybe she’ll learn to enjoy it eventually. In the meantime, though, she has plenty of delicious food to get used to. That makes her happy, I’m sure.

  There’s little doubt that she’s been communicating with the other girls. Baby seems to be doing just fine, though she is curious, but she doesn’t seem stressed that she’s not with them. It’s natural for people to be anxious about them meeting, but it’s important to send our positive energy to Baby where she is and celebrate her successes.

How wonderful that she seems to have adapted to her new life so quickly. Perhaps it’s the tremendous care and sensitivity to their needs that the sanctuary provides.
