April: Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month

April officially marks Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month! In our careers working with captive elephants, we have unfortunately seen things we can never erase. We respect and honor what the elephants here at sanctuary have survived and watch them heal and thrive in spite of any abuse or neglect they may have faced in their pasts.

Regardless, as sensitive individuals, so many of us find it hard to look away when we know of a wrong that’s being perpetrated against another being. The issue of animal welfare is global. You can witness animal cruelty in your neighbor’s back yard or in videos from a circus around the world. Though legislation is gradually changing the lives of captive animals, we are asking you to raise awareness about this important issue in any way you can. We have seen over and over how abused animals of so many species have rebounded and found happiness with the love and care of others. This is an area where we can all bear witness to the power of people’s voices.

If you would like to show your support online, we have created this profile picture that’s suitable for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and many other social media platforms. Feel free to use it and to announce yourself as an animal protection advocate.
