Another Step on Lady’s Path

Lady near the barnOver the past month or so, we’ve been sharing Lady’s progress as she deals with swelling in her legs and feet. This ailment, in addition to the “normal” terrible state of her feet, has made her steps more tentative and her left foot seems more painful at times. Based on the signs we generally look for, she hadn’t been lying down for weeks and, when she was particularly tired and her feet were especially sore, she would lean her head on the tops of the fences to take the weight off. After looking for several weeks, we finally found a nest-like area that suggested she’d gotten some sleep lying down, rather than standing up, as she had been doing. Lady had more difficulty during the days, but at night she would return to more of her spunky self.

We began working with a veterinary homeopath who recommended a remedy tailored to Lady’s specific needs. After following the protocol and giving Lady her oral dose, about an hour later, she had a significant bout of diarrhea. She seemed crampy and her belly was making lots of noise. When that happened, Tina called Kat on the radio and Kat went down to check on Lady. Oddly enough, when Kat arrived, Lady seemed her normal, cheeky self. Perhaps she just had something she needed to purge. Right after it happened, she didn’t want to eat any produce, but when Kat was there, Lady was already grazing. Shortly thereafter, she started eating some hay and then decided to have some produce after all (with some medicine snuck in). After that, Lady ate her dinner without reservation. That evening, she went into Yard 5 – somewhere she hadn’t ventured to on her own in weeks.

In the afternoon, Lady unexpectedly presented her foot on the fence for treatment. She does this when she’s particularly interested in a bucket of fruit, which the elephants get during footwork. Until then, she hadn’t been offering her feet, but she did it without prompting, eventually presenting both of her feet on separate occasions. Caregiver Tina was surprised that Lady would do this, considering the stiffness in her legs, and ended up only doing basic footwork to keep things short and comfortable.

A few days later and Lady seemed to be getting sore again. She still had swelling in her left leg and foot, and the right side seemed stiff once more. Lady started to seem unlike her spunky self, so we talked to the homeopath again and gave her another dose of her remedy, trying to gauge the impact of the meds and when a next dose, or a switch in remedy would be needed. By dinner, she definitely had more energy and ended up going just inside of Yard 5. Her right leg is improving and she can bend it again, though she still has swelling on the left side. Overall, she had a slight step back – then we repeated her dose – and then she moved forward again. While she’s definitely not back to what’s considered normal for Lady, she’s doing much better than she was a few weeks ago.

So very difficult for the care staff. Liken it to hitting a moving target to see what works for this lovely LadyBug that we love so much. We will never know the totality of her past suffering, but know she does not deserve even one more day of it. Warmest and most powerful wishes for Lady’s feet and legs to heal enough for her to enjoy her life and the freedom of sanctuary.

Do you know what is causing the swelling in her left leg? I’ve recently seen a zoo elephant with a swollen leg like that, she had foot disease in the past… around 2 yrs ago. I’m v concerned for her- there are no qualified vets…

There are a number of things that could have happened. It’s hard to know, since we’re not with her all day, every day. So, no, we don’t know for sure.

I’ve attested the wonders of homeopathy (and other alternative treatments like magnetotherapy, especially alied to the medirian points, instead of the usual needles) in my own life and also from veterinary cases of successful treatments I’ve been told about.

Thank you so much for the precious updates and may the Healing Mothers of the East help Lady on her path to recovery. Blessed be you all for everything you do for these precious beings. I can’t donate due to my limited pension and also for already donating to other orgs but I always share you posts

A good thing to remember is that right now, Lady is experiencing some pain and discomfort, but she isn’t suffering. But your reaction just shows you care about Lady, which is wonderful. Thank you.
