Alma the Tapir and Her Snacks

Alma is a tapir that came to us, initially as part of the wild animal rehabilitation and release program. Because she is blind and has some other medical issues, she is a permanent resident and has become a well-loved and sometimes cantankerous member of our sanctuary family.

Each day, a caregiver brings Alma some browse – her favorite vines and branches – as a treat and to maintain a balanced diet. Here she is enjoying those snacks. We think she’s quite charming.

P.S.: Part of the video is in slow motion, and there is a low, droning sound. Not to worry; it’s just a rooster making a racket, with the sound slowed down.

Looks like someone hasn’t been to the dentist for a while now. She can use a little dental work on those choppers. 🙂

not that we know- they don’t suck water up into them or use it for any of those functions- it’s just a long, cute nose. 🙂

Oh my goodness! What a delight to see! And how she is half anteater half boar half glamour vixen!! The peanut gallery seems quiet on Alma… but she is a treasure in my corazón. Thank you for another insightful sanctuary moment. Always love for what you do and how you conduct their sanctuary. xx

I love, love, love Alma. Look at that sweet, sweet face. I wonder if there is a guess on her age? I just hope she is with us for a long time.

We can’t be sure exactly how old Alma is, but she is at least 5.
