African Barn Construction Can Begin!

Maia and BugsySo today while concrete was being poured to finish the bridge, Maia watched the workers and Bugsy watched Maia.

Because of the amount of concrete trucks, steel tubes and eventually elephants that will have to be brought up the hill to the African barn, Scott decided to check the condition of our bridge. As with most things he was told it was fine, but it was not. There were numerous rotting supports, so the guys re-built the bridge using steel to replace the wood. They built guard rails (which none of the bridges here have) and laid the framework for the cement. Today the concrete was poured and in a couple of days the bridge will be ready for the load of steel tubes that is waiting at the bottom of the hill, to be brought up.

Now construction of the interior stalls of the African barn can begin!!

Sanctuary Bridge construction

The almost finished product. Scott will now spend the afternoon being very overly detail oriented, working the concrete to make sure the finish is as close to perfect as possible.

No doubt that concrete will look like marble when Scott is done! Do the two of you do all the care of the sanctuary yourselves??? This is very exciting to know work is moving forward. Hoping to hear a few more elephants are on the way! Love you both!

We definitely don’t do it alone. There are two wonderful maintenance guys, two lovely welders, a fantastic caregiver, an amazing vet/caregiver, a special lady who helps take care of us and the critters by the house and then a slew of volunteers around the globe who help us get things done and keep our sanity. It definitely takes a team of people and we happen to love ours. 🙂
