A Very Long Day

Maia standing over Guida

It has been a very long day, and I’m sorry if this comes out as a ramble, but we wanted to write a quick note. This morning Maia was still near Guida’s body, the area showed that she has been walking all around her at different points. There was also Rana dung on the other side of the fence, right where Guida was. We know she was there, but we’re not sure if she went over to her.

This morning Maia and Rana were kept in the yards closer to the barn during Guida’s necropsy. The first time Maia walked by Rana, she stopped, didn’t smell or touch her with her trunk, but leaned gently into her and stayed there for a few minutes. Rana is being respectful and allowing Maia her space, which shows Rana learned from her first lessons with Maia and Guida. Later on, Maia came up by Rana again and stuck her trunk in Rana’s mouth. Rana has allowed all of the interactions, being soft and sweet, but also watchful of all of the emotional cues Maia is giving her.

They both seem ok, Maia is a little quiet, but all things considered, is doing well. Once everything was done, the gates were opened back up, and both ladies now have access to where Guida is buried.

I am devastated but honestly my biggest heart-ache is for all of you… the CSE family. You show us everyday through your posts how much you all care for each other… how the beloved elephants care for each other. My heart is breaking for all of you. I also realize that you do not have the luxury to stop and mourn, that your responsibilities are great. Your attention to detail for all of your charges means you are present for them even though I know you want to curl up in a ball. It must have been a very hard day that you had to push through with your care and concern directed at Maia and Rana. I hope that through this terrible time you can feel the love so many of us are wrapping you in. If only there were words or deeds to help you but there are none for this grief. It is so unfair, so horribly horribly unfair to have to say goodbye to Guida so soon. May her peace be felt by all, maybe not yet, but eventually. Blessings and much love to you.

It has to have been the worst day for you both. I’m relieved Maia and Rana are doing ok. Rana bless her is being very respectful to Maia and Guida. My thoughts have been with you both all day. You need to take the time you need to recover from this dreadful and unexpected situation.
In one way thank goodness Maia now has Rana there. She needs ele contact too. Bless you all, my thoughts are with you all the time right now. ???

Thank you for taking the time to keep us filled in on how Maia and RanaBug are doing. As Maggie said above, so thankful Rana is there as well as all the loving humans at Sanctuary to help Miss Maia, especially, as she grieves. Together you will help each other to get through this. Thinking of you all every day and sending as many mental hugs and lots of love to you all through the wires. You mention dear Guida will be buried there at sanctuary, and that has been a comfort to me. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
