As we recently mentioned, the grass in the habitat’s burned area has grown back and is incredible right now. Maia has crossed the creek in Yard 5 and has discovered how lush the grass is for herself.
Usually, the new grass grows back among the old, dead grass from the previous year, so the transition is slower. With last year’s grass burned, each trunkful is entirely young, fresh grass. Maia looks thrilled. She seems so very light and smiley and seems content to stay in the area.
Maia went to those pastures during Shirlei’s weekend, and when Shirlei returned and fed the girls, the first thing she exclaimed was, “Maia looks so happy!”
The back of Yard 5 was one of Maia & Guida’s favorite places, so it’s nice to see Maia back there, looking so peaceful and content. The trees still have some ash on them from the fire, and Maia has been scratching and rubbing on them, covering her in smears of ash.
Photo of Maia, across the creek in Yard 5, with ash all over her face.

November 27, 2020 at 5:02 pmThere’s Maia looking so adorable. Love the fuzz on her head. Maybe she’s trying to disguise herself with the ash. I always wished I could be a fly on the wall inside their heads. I can just picture the beautiful, lush grass you speak of. Nice pic of Ms Maia. Did I say I Love her headfuzz?
❤?❤?❤?❤?❤?

November 28, 2020 at 4:39 amGo get the fresh grass, Maia!
And she won’t be selfish and think of the other elephants and animals and not eat it all on her own…
Or will she eat it all herself? 🙂

November 28, 2020 at 8:57 amWhat a cutie. It must make all her caregivers just mushy seeing her so content. I know it makes me smile. Also, a about out to Cher and the elephant, Raaman. Another successful rescue! Yeah!!
