Just a quick update this morning to let everyone know that everything here is good. We had several people ask yesterday if Lady was okay, and others asking if the girls’ food was impacted. So we are posting a photo of Lady from this morning.
Lady is fine. As we mentioned in a post yesterday, we knew she was feeling a little uncomfortable with all of the strangers around, and since she doesn’t always like photos taken we chose to respect that about her and not take any. But this morning she was much lighter so we took a couple of photos so you can see she is all good.
And as for the girls’ food being impacted, as we mentioned yesterday almost all of Yards 4 and 5 are untouched and that’s where they spend most of their time.
Yards 1, 2, and 3 were also untouched by the fire – so they are fine as well. The only minor impact on food available from the habitat for the girls is the palms that we collect from outside of the actual elephant area, and although some of them did burn there are many many many palms that still remain. They are something that thankfully do not burn well.
Depending upon time we may do an update later in the day, but we at least wanted to let everyone know that all is well, and as I write this you can actually hear raindrops – although I don’t want to jinx it.
Photo: Lady eating breakfast in the company of nearby anis (the little black birds) who were just out of the photo.

October 11, 2020 at 11:36 amThank you. I am breathing better with this news. Stay safe. THANK YOU. I was concerned about space moving forward, and if this will impact acquiring elephants with less land not stripped by fire, if that makes sense.
Just hope there is still enough for the elephants coming, including the Africans. Many thanks.

October 11, 2020 at 11:46 amGlad to hear that all of you are OK! Terrible, terrible that this fire should happen to you! Have you got insurances that will cover the loss of land? Are 85% of your 2.800 acres of land destroyed? Take care of you. Margareta from Sweden

October 14, 2020 at 1:32 pmOur lawyer is talking with the insurance company to figure out what is/isn’t covered. Like many things here, we’re sure it will take a while to get sorted out. The land that is burned is undeveloped, so the pastures completely burned, small trees did as well, but old-growth trees and around the creeks did fine. It’s not total devastation, but the damage is significant.

October 11, 2020 at 11:55 amThank you so much for the update this morning and it’s a relief to hear that all remains well post-fire and that the elephants’ immediate habitats survived in good shape. Hoping all the humans are doing well also – most would be shell-shocked and completely exhausted after this major event, but we know you are no ordinary people! We are sending very best wishes to all, both animals and humans! I imagine the air quality is not too good – have you noticed any difficulties for the elephants with breathing the smoky air? I know the rains will be so welcome for so many reasons!

October 11, 2020 at 11:59 amYou guys seem to be among the few grown-ups out there. Not only starting yesterday’s news of the fires thinking of US and allaying OUR worry, but letting us know this morning that things are sort of okay. which is very good news. My heart is returning to its regular beat! Like others, I’d been concerned not only about their food but, worse, your all having to breathe smoke. Please god/universe/Mother Nature/whatever that those few raindrops turn into serious rain. Thanks so much for taking the time despite, I’m sure, being exhausted. You prove yet again that you’re the best.

October 11, 2020 at 7:09 pmI’m glad all the elephants/animals are safe, but what about Kenya’s barn and fencing. Will the fire delay her coming to sanctuary next year.
Kat Blais says
October 14, 2020 at 1:30 pmHer barn and fencing are fine, the habitat did suffer from the fire, but it will recover in time for Kenya’s arrival. Pocha and Guillermina are scheduled to come first, so things should be lush and green when it’s Kenya’s turn.
