A Nighttime Visit With Sandro

AUDIO in English and Portuguese! We’ve mentioned before that, when elephants are new to sanctuary, we check on them in the evening around bedtime. They get some food and some companionship and we try to bring them a sense of safety and belonging. On a recent night, Scott visited Sandro, who seemed to be feeling pretty relaxed.

Even though it’s dark, you can see that he’s got some wet and muddy spots–likely from self-created pools he’s been making from the water troughs. His progress has been impressive, with his increasing comfort working with his care team, letting them touch him and standing calmly in the treatment chute. It’s just the beginning of his journey here at sanctuary, but he’s accomplished so much already and is making great strides both behaviorally and emotionally.

Hi handsome boy! Glad to know he’s beginning to trust his caregivers. I know how very important that is for his healthcare. Have a good night Sandro and Scott🥰

he goes down by himself, but lets another caregiver who lives on site know that he is going down, and then calls when he is done, so they know everything is ok.

I don’t think we can truly imagine how wonderful it must be for Sandro to not be closed in to a small, dark space all night long. To be able to have the choice to wander and roam around as he chooses is just amazing. And, as we know from the girls, overnight/all night parties are sometimes a big event and maybe soon Sandro will feel comfortable enough to join in the trumpeting the next time the girls pull an all-nighter!!!
