A Little Shade for Rana and Mara

When the elephants nap during the day, they generally do so standing up. It’s not too common for them to lie down unless it’s for an evening rest (though we have found sweet instances of one elephant standing over a sleepy friend in a protective way). After breakfast, Mara and Rana made their way over to a tree they are fond of and decided to share the shade together. They both got a little drowsy and leaned into the tree as they relaxed.

Every once in a while, one of the two would scratch her sides or bottom, but mostly they seemed to want a few quiet moments together before they head off for, well, more quiet moments together. Even when their days are uneventful, they can still choose one favorite spot to relax before moving on to another area they enjoy. The rainy season still has a good month left, so they’re taking full advantage of all the green around them–and the full-to-the-brim ponds. But in the meantime, a little light snoozing seems like the best plan for the morning.

PS: Our annual Trunks & Treasures online auction will be held from June 12-20, and we are still accepting auction items! From apparel and accessories to gift certificates and experiences, every contribution helps make the auction a meaningful and impactful fundraising event for Maia, Rana, Mara, Bambi and Guille. If you would like to support the elephants and participate in the auction by donating a special item or service, please fill out our auction item donation form.

I love the way one rubbed her eyes with her trunk like a sleepy child 🙂
