Part of our job here is to be elephant sleuths. Not only do we track the elephants around the habitat, but we pay attention to any small change in behavior or appearance. All the little clues hold important information and insights into their health and moods. This makes us very detail-oriented.
Well, our inner-Sherlock Holmes suspects that Miss Lady is sneaking into the pond when nobody is around.
She has spent the last few days in Yard 4. According to the other girls, Yard 4 contains the best pond in all of Sanctuary. Lady has been spending a lot of time around everyone’s favorite pond.
We know she stands on the edge of the pond and splashes, but we have also noted the following:
- She has been saturated in a very even pattern. When someone is wet from splashing, they generally have dry spots mixed in with the wet or splash mar
- We have observed her at the barn, fully dry, but with fresh dirt all over, including around her eyes – again; this is in a very even pattern. Dirt only sticks to skin while wet; and; for the soil to stick so evenly; she would have to be evenly wet (which is unlikely from splashing)
- There is fresh dung floating in the pond which was scooped before Lady had access.
Despite the signs, every time we go out to see her, she is standing very innocently next to the pond (see photo).
As Sherlock says, once you eliminate the impossible, whatever is left, no matter how improbable, is the truth… Of course, in this case, Lady loves water so much, it’s also the most likely answer.
What else can we say? A Lady is entitled to her secrets.
