After Maia spent time with Rana and Mara earlier this week, she seemed a bit more grounded (We talked about this a little in yesterday’s post). A day or two later, Scott and Kat came upon caregiver Shirlei in the road, standing on her four-wheeler looking into the habitat. They pulled up next to her, and she pointed out Maia. From her vantage point, you could see Maia in the distance having a party of one. It was similar to one of Lady’s “Party of One” events, except Maia-style, so it was a Lady party, amplified. She ran through the bushes full speed and was rolling on the ground, trumpeting, and breaking trees. It was a full-on Silly-Maia-Event. When Maia gets silly, she gets silly. It was evident she was having a Big Fun time as she rolled on the ground trumpeting. The closest elephant to Maia was Lady, but when we checked on Lady, we found that she wasn’t paying attention to Maia but was instead observing Rana along a different fence.
In terms of Maia’s party, we suspect that she had a lot of built-up energy due to the emotions of the fire and from staying in the smaller yards for safety. She was releasing all that energy in a big and silly way. Later that evening, when we fed her near the pond, she was very calm and relaxed. As we know, Maia’s energy has limits and it seems her daily expenditure was used up at ‘play’ time.
Photo of a very muddy Maia.

October 18, 2020 at 5:15 pmMust have been some outrageous joke she suddenly remembered. Kind of short and long term memory issue. Maia you’re so utterly charming when you’re ‘silly’.?

October 18, 2020 at 5:21 pmAhhh!! Bebe! U looking so light & cute in this here picture. Good deal that Shirlei was able to catch her little party, to tell us that Bebe knocked down some tree’s and rolled around, this is wonderful to know. I’m glad Lady-Bug was watching Rana too, to me, that is a nice thing for her, to be able to open her mist Lovely Eyes and see other Elephants!, and hear them as well. Sounds like our big-little Maia is really getting grounded and feeling “ok” through this ordeal. This is a wonderful picture of her, it really shows us her relaxed face and “silly” energy with her trunk in her mouth. Love her Fuzzy head.

October 18, 2020 at 6:41 pmI wish I could get into an elephant’s mind and know what she is thinking and feeling in her own words.
All the comments you make it seems as though you have a very good idea yourselves. At least this group of elephants know that these humans can be trusted and perhaps even loved.

October 19, 2020 at 2:31 amThis is good to read. Maia back in action and feeling the need to express herself. How wonderful that Shirlei was around just at the time Maia “partied” and was able to witness it. Maia like a young puppy happy to be alive. Absolutely fabulous!
Yet another beautiful photo of Maia….I love these blogs!
