It’s no secret that our supporters always come through when asked, and you’ve done so again this #GivingTuesday, helping us raise an incredible $68,979 in 24 hours as part of our Best Foot Forward campaign for Lady’s annual treatment and care expenses.
Knowing Lady’s story of a life from circus to zoo to sanctuary demonstrates how miraculous her growth here at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil has been. She’s overcome abuse and extreme neglect to find parts of herself that lay hidden for perhaps decades. All of that healing has come from the life that sanctuary offers. While every day is part of a journey, we feel that Lady seems to know herself in a way that many human beings do not, or cannot. She takes each day as it comes, on good days or more difficult ones, when her feet are on an upswing or downturn, whether she wants simply her own company, or the companionship of others (human or otherwise). Lady is unlike any other elephant we’ve ever encountered, and we never expect to meet another individual with such a determined, yet cheeky, personality.
There’s no doubt that Lady, like all of the elephants at sanctuary, is special in hundreds of different ways. Her impact on us – and on you – cannot be measured in dollars. But the treatments required to keep her healthy are significant, and you have helped us, and Lady, take a strong step into the future.
With love and gratitude,
Scott, Kat, and the whole GSE team

November 30, 2022 at 3:35 pmHello! I’ve been so enjoying following the progress of your elephants! I didn’t learn about you until Pocha and Guillermina were already en route, so I don’t know how long the process of rescuing the elephants from the zoos usually takes. Is there any idea of when the other elephants in waiting may be ready? Months or years?
Thank you for all that you do!!!

November 30, 2022 at 3:40 pmThere’s not really an answer to the question of how long things usually take. Each rescue takes a different amount of time, as they all face different required steps for transport. Generally it’s not a super quick process, since we share information early on in the process, which is rare. At the moment, the other elephants cannot be moved because we’re still waiting on permits to be approved – something that can take many months, depending on the situation. So there’s no simple answer to your question – only that each elephant has a unique set of circumstances that must be faced.

November 30, 2022 at 4:24 pmIncredible! It is no big surprise that the troops rally around LadyBug. We LOVE her. She is an inspiration, having the courage to keep on keeping on when her feet have to be painful. However, by pushing through it, and walking she has undoubtably helped herself. ❤️🐘❤️
